Science Camps Offer Rewarding Experiences (S.C.O.R.E.) is a fruition of a dream and vision to provide learning opportunities to rural students. In 1986/1987, junior high science teacher Marla Smith was approached by Sue Renken, who was looking for a science camp for her son. No such program existed; therefore, they decided to develop one. Sue and Marla created a multi-award-winning program that is not replicated anywhere.

 

During the summer of 1989, the first S.C.O.R.E. camps were held with 166 Imperial Grade School students. The success of the camp became evident when the number of participants grew until the enrollment was limited to 330 participants, grades 1-6, to ensure small groups.  The cost to students is kept to a minimum to provide opportunities for many students to attend. Though there have been many changes as S.C.O.R.E. has grown through the years, the goal of providing unique, exciting programs and activities to stimulate and inspire young scientists through hands-on experiences has not.  

 

After 26 years of zealous dedication to the young scientists, Marla Smith retired from her position as S.C.O.R.E. Project and Curriculum Director following the 2015 camp. Kim Spady and Charlesa Kline accepted the baton and carry on the excellence expected at S.C.O.R.E. camps. They have mastered the team approach and are committed to keeping Marla and Sue’s dream alive.

 

The success of S.C.O.R.E. is attributed to continued support from the Chase County community.  Numerous individuals, families, and businesses provide financial support, housing, and supplies along with volunteering and assisting every other summer while S.C.O.R.E. camp is held.

 

The commitment to strive for excellence continues through the efforts of those involved and dedicated to S.C.O.R.E..
